Benfleet RC Duathlon 2017

Sunday 28th May 2017
West Hanningfield Village Hall (CM2 8UJ)

Format: Run-Bike-Run

We invite all members to join us at the Club Duathlon.
You will complete a 3 mile out n back run, get on your bike for a 2 lap, 15 mile ride around the reservoir (easy signed route), then return your bike to the field behind the Village Hall and complete the final 2 mile out n back run to finish.

It’s a “training race” for all abilities, you can use a Mountain Bike or a Road Bike.
Its ideal as a taster of multi-sport for novices, as a training event or just a bit of fun.

Put your name on the list at the club if you’d like to take part.
You may enter as a team of two with one running and one cycling, however, in the spirit of encouraging participation, this is a mixed gender event.
(Therefore teams of two men will be excluded from the results)
If you are open to running or riding but need a team mate, add your name and teams will be assigned.

  • Prizes for Overall Winner (M & F) & 1st Team
  • Start 9:30am (get there around 8:30 to park and set up)
  • Entry per person: £4 Members / £6 Non Members (ie. Friends/Family etc)

Winter Duathlon Team Relay Result

On Sunday three of us headed over to the CycloPark Gravesend to compete as a three man team in the BridgeEvents run Winter Duathlon.
Last year our team (Ross Hollands, Paul Ruffy, Richard Jones) finished a very good fourth place and this year we were hoping to go one better and make the podium. The format this year was slightly modified and comprised of a 3krun/12.5k bike/3km run all to be completed by each team member.
I’m pleased to say we did just that coming home 3rd fastest team overall. Mason Burrage, a new runner but keen cyclist, stepped up the challenge to fill in for an injured Richard and did a sterling job, posting the fastest bike time of the threesome. His overall time reading very well in the context of team result it again goes to show the benefit of being strong on the bike and how much time you can make up.
Here’s our overall result along with a rather squeezed podium picture!

Hadleigh Park Open Water Swimming

A short while ago now Hadleigh Park opened their small lake for open water swimming, early reports have been positive about the new venue.
Its certainly very convenient to have a new OWS facility in the locality!
Here’s the details, please note that from next year this will likely change.

New club kit!

Our new club kit from Orca has arrived!
Those that have ordered should have already got theirs and I’m pleased to say everyone is happy with the new designs.
Thanks to everyone for their input I think the end result has been worth the wait.
We have some stock available for those that didn’t order during the window which I hope will tie us over until the next ordering window,
If we don’t have what you want bear in mind that you’ll be able to order whatever items you like in any size when we next open an ordering window with Orca. We have to do it this to meet minimum order requirements.

Latest Members Exploits!

Summer has finally arrived and across a big weekend of triathlon action several members were in action including myself.
Tom Byrne was at Ironman Austria – thats 140.7 miles of swimming running and cycling -so we’ll start with his report!

The swim start was done in waves and my age group started at 7:05 . The swim was roughly 1.7 miles in lake followed by a narrow canal swim for remainder of swim which was overcrowded but fast flowing . The bike was undulating through the base of Austrian Alps with occasional climbs on a two lap course and fast in some places but beautiful views to say the least . Tough in some places on bike but pushed harder than anticipated on bike but still felt good going into run which was very hot indeed .. Kept a nice average on run aiming for 4 hour marathon but as I lost my sun cream on 1st transition sun stroke kicked in on mile 8 on marathon and from that moment any fluid or food that went in me came straight back up again , was sick a few times on route but managed to slog through the marathon which was truly the hardest run of my life .. The Finish line support was amazing though and the Austrians done us proud . Got round quicker than planned but it all came together on the day . Had to go on drop in medical tent at end though due to dehydration and sunstroke but it was worth it . Great course , great country and highly recommended

Here is Tom at the finish, and in case you’re wondering what the medical tape is for he needed intravenous fluids after throwing up during the marathon(!) What he didn’t mention above was that he completed in a superb 11hrs 29min finishing 547 from 1437 athletes and 116 in his age category.

Another old face completing the full Iron distance with Tom was David Thomson, (a previous winner of our club duathlon!). Dave smashed the swim and bike but due to injury (I’m guessing here as Dave has had a long term one) couldn’t run his normal race, yet still ended up with a very respectable Ironman time of 12:44, 308 in his age group!
To finish an Ironman event is to win.

11707488_989626464405503_4212312909143245473_nAlso in action this weekend was Richard Jones, taking on his first Half Iron distance (middle) at Grafham Water.

on Sunday I completed my first ever 70.3, the Grafman Middle Distance National Championships at Grafham Water, Cambs.
Very well organised event comprising 1.2 mile swim with a beach start and ‘Australian’ exit after first lap(great fun), 56m bike (rained throughout) and 13.1m run on mixed terrain. The last few miles were a struggle but still pleased with result. 5.14.33, 15th in age group and 161st o/a out of a field of 500.
Bring on the next one!

Well done Richard – a great performance.

I also took on a half Iron distance at the Ironman 70.3 Wimbleball Lake, which was celebrating its 10th edition, a very hilly event that a few of our members have taken on in the past. It was a case of finally laying a ghost to rest for me as I was at least able to put a decent run at the back end of the event and came home in 5:24:25, 28th in my age cat and 96th overall.
Here’s me going past the Haddon Hill feed station on a very wet bike leg. DSC_0019

Lastly Matt Leeman was competing at the very top of the sport for prize money at Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon, another middle distance event, which he gobbled up in the frankly ridiculous time of 4:28:28, (including a 1:19 run!) finishing in 2nd place Well done Matt on another podium and cheque!
